Ahmadu Bello University NAERLS Launches Tree Planting Campaign for Climate Resilience
The National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has launched a tree planting and agroforestry campaign aimed at mitigating climate change and improving the resilience of smallholder farmers in Kaduna State.
The campaign, themed "Tree Planting for Resilience," was officially flagged off on July 28, 2025, at Government Secondary School, Kakeyi, Zaria. The initiative is supported by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and other partners. The goal is to plant 200,000 trees across 375 hectares, benefiting an estimated 10,000 farmers.
The Director of NAERLS, Professor Yusuf Sani, emphasized the importance of replanting trees and warned against indiscriminate tree felling. The Principal Investigator, Professor C. K. Daudu, noted that the campaign is designed to address the increasing impact of climate change, particularly in farming communities.
The event was attended by representatives of the Emir of Zazzau, Kaduna State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Zaria Local Government Council, who pledged full support for the campaign. The Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research and Innovation, Prof. Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi, described tree planting as a moral and religious obligation.
