The Akwa Ibom State Government has taken a decisive stance against corruption within its education sector, announcing plans to demote a head teacher accused of extorting parents of pupils in a public school. The revelation came from the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, during the distribution of ARISE branded exercise books for pupils across all public primary schools in Uyo senatorial district.

Mrs. Etiebet disclosed that the head teacher in question had allegedly demanded N1,000 from all new intakes and extorted N5,000 from each pupil for their placement letters. Describing this behavior as a sabotage to government efforts in providing free and compulsory education, she emphasized the seriousness of the offense and warned other head teachers to refrain from similar actions or face severe penalties.

"I want to use this opportunity to warn all head teachers to do your best, do not collect money of any kind from students or else you would be demoted with immediate effect through the appropriate disciplinary channels," she sternly stated.

Supporting this stance, John Udo, a member of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), confirmed that investigations into the allegations had been concluded. He assured that the process of refunding the illegal charges to parents was already underway, emphasizing the state's commitment to providing free and fair education.

"Education is free and fair in Akwa Ibom State, you have not been asked to collect money from any student," Udo reaffirmed, commending the Governor for facilitating the prompt payment of counterpart funding for all Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) projects in the state.
