Abia State Governor, Mr. Alex Otti, has voiced concern over the increasing exodus of Nigeria's top talents to developed economies, labeling the phenomenon as the 'japa' syndrome. Speaking at the funeral service of renowned chartered accountant Kalu Uke Kalu, Otti emphasized the need for political leaders to implement effective policies to curb brain-drain and entice skilled professionals back home.

The 'japa' syndrome, a term now associated with the mass migration of skilled individuals seeking better opportunities abroad, has escalated due to challenging economic conditions and soaring unemployment rates in Nigeria.

Governor Otti, through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kazie Uko, asserted that with the right policies, Nigeria could not only put a stop to the brain-drain trend but also attract back those who have already migrated. He urged leaders to take deliberate actions to retain the country's best talents and prevent them from seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Otti highlighted that his administration in Abia State is committed to creating a conducive environment for people and businesses to flourish. He expressed the necessity of encouraging the younger generation to stay in the country and actively bringing back those who have already left.

During the funeral service for Elder Kalu, Governor Otti paid tribute to the late chartered accountant, describing him as a great Nigerian who contributed significantly to societal development. He expressed concern about the departure of highly skilled professionals from the country and emphasized the responsibility of leaders to attract them back.

The governor concluded, "For those who are opportune to lead, we need to deliberately make efforts to attract our best people back." The funeral service included a sermon by Most Rev Benebo Fubara-Manuel, urging the living to uphold integrity and make positive contributions to society, and a funeral oration by the first son of the deceased, Mr. David Kalu, highlighting his father's contributions across various sectors.
