In a landmark move aimed at revolutionizing healthcare access for tertiary students, the Anambra State Government has announced the introduction of a comprehensive health insurance scheme. Spearheaded by the Anambra State Health Insurance Authority (ASHIA), this initiative is set to significantly enhance healthcare services for students in higher institutions across the state.

Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, Managing Director of ASHIA, unveiled the ambitious plan during a recent visit to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in Awka. Under the provisions of the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme Law 2016, which aligns with the new National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022, health insurance is now compulsory for every resident of the state, including tertiary students.

ASHIA, in collaboration with a healthcare agency, is proposing a premium of N4,000 per student per academic session, ensuring comprehensive coverage beyond campus boundaries.

This groundbreaking initiative will enable students to access quality healthcare services during vacations in accredited hospitals nationwide, simply by using their identity cards.
