ASUU Holds Rally in Lagos Against Alleged Unlawful Dismissals of Lecturers at Lagos State University
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) held a rally today in Lagos protesting the alleged unlawful dismissal of five lecturers from Lagos State University. The union condemned the dismissals and highlighted broader issues of victimization faced by academic staff across several universities.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) organized a rally today, Tuesday, in response to the alleged unlawful dismissal of five lecturers from Lagos State University (LASU) in Ojo. The demonstration began at 10 am.
In a statement released by the ASUU Owerri Zone, the union denounced the dismissals as illegal. The statement highlighted ongoing victimisation of academic staff across various institutions, listing Kogi State University (KSU), Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma (AAUE) in Edo State, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in Anambra State, and the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) in Imo State as other institutions where members are experiencing similar issues.
The ASUU statement expressed deep concern over what it described as the "deliberate reluctance" of university administration councils and visitors to address the victimisation of academic staff who stand up for the truth. The union outlined various forms of mistreatment including dismissal, suspension, denial of promotions, and the seizure of salaries.
“Fellow Nigerians and compatriots, we are disheartened by the deliberate reluctance of the respective university administration governing councils and visitors of the stated universities to halt the spiralling victimisation of academic staff for all standing for truth,” the statement read.
ASUU also criticized the delayed justice in a case involving Kogi State University, Anyigba. The union has been waiting for seven years for a resolution in a case where several members were dismissed in 2019. These members included Isaac Oyewumi, the union's chairman; Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu, vice chairman; Dr. Tony Dansu, secretary; Adeolu Oluwaseyi Oyekan, assistant secretary; and Oluwakemi Aboderin-Shonibare, treasurer.
Kogi State University had accused the lecturers of unauthorized handling and dissemination of confidential documents, which led to their dismissal. However, the affected lecturers have consistently denied these allegations.
