ASUU STRIKE: The salary crisis arose when the Government reduced the monthly subvention of the University from 270 million to 41.3million - ASUU narrates
Academic Staff Union of Universities has lamented of the insincerity in paying staff's salary by the University Administration
The Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma chapter, has narrated that the salary crisis which is taking its toll on the University arose when the Edo State Government reduced the monthly subvention of the University from 270 million naira to 41.3million naira, Myschoolnews.ng report.
This was contained in a statement signed and released by the Chairperson and Secretary of the Union in Ambrose Alli University(AAU) and made available to our correspondent.
Part of the statement reads “The Governing Council amongst other activities conducted a ‘Due Diligence’ exercise and submitted a report to the Government that unraveled some monumental fraud. Till date, those incriminated are yet to be prosecuted and published by Government”
“It has been reported that escalation of the salary crisis arose when Edo State Government reduced the monthly subvention of the University from 270 million naira to 41.3 million naira to handle q monthly wage bill of over 450 million naira.” the statement also read.
The statement partly reads “Worried by the ever-increasing number of outstanding emoluments of Staff in the University and its implication for the wellbeing of the University, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma chapter, for example, wrote several letters to the University Administration and the Visitor to the University on the salary crisis with a view to receiving it. Such efforts led to the meeting of the Union with the Edo State Government led by the Governor on 19th March, 2021. Frustrated by the outcome of the meeting with no commitment from the government, ASUU, AAU, Ekpoma commenced a strike on 25th March, 2021. ”
“Currently, the unpaid arrears of emoluments of Staff in the University stand at nineteen (19) months as presented in the table below. The present situation is that of politicization of the salary crisis by the University Administration with threats it of “no work, no pay”, “declare vacancies in the positions ”, “sack them”, to workers who are victims of the University Administration's failure in its financial reasonability to Staff” it also reads.
