ASUU YUMSUK Slams Autonomy Erosion in Kano Universities, Demands Immediate Gov't Intervention

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano (YUMSUK) branch, has strongly criticized what it perceives as a growing encroachment on the autonomy of Kano State-owned universities. The union expressed deep concern over recent actions that it contends violate the Universities Miscellaneous Act (2003, 2012 as amended) and the specific laws governing these institutions.

Dr. Mansur Said, Chairman of ASUU YUMSUK, addressed the media at the union’s headquarters on the YUMSUK campus, highlighting key grievances. He accused the Kano State Government of arbitrarily dissolving the Governing Councils of Yusuf Maitama Sule University (YUMSUK) and Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil. This action, according to Dr. Said, has left the universities vulnerable to misuse by university administrators in collusion with political figures.

“The dissolution of these Governing Councils has opened the door to various illegal activities, including unauthorized recruitments and breaches of established procurement processes,” Dr. Said asserted.

The union has called upon the Kano State Government to reinstate the dissolved Governing Councils of both universities to restore proper governance structures.

Additionally, ASUU YUMSUK raised concerns about the severe underfunding of the universities by the Kano State Government. It revealed that in 2023, only 30.3% and 46.2% of the budgeted expenditure for KUST and YUMSUK respectively were released.

“We urgently appeal to both the Federal Government and the Kano State Government to adequately fund these universities to prevent their imminent collapse,” the union emphasized.

ASUU YUMSUK also called on media organizations, civil society groups, labor unions, and student bodies to support its efforts to safeguard the integrity and operational efficiency of Nigerian public universities.
