On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Dr. Adegbite Temilade, a medical consultant in Psychiatry, delivered a powerful seminar at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on the importance of mental health in the workplace. The event, titled "Optimizing Occupational Well-Being: Strategic Approaches to Prioritizing Mental Health in the Workplace," was held at the Professor Rahman Bello Auditorium.
Dr. Adegbite stressed that sound mental health is a key factor in optimizing employee performance and driving organizational success. Referencing the World Health Organization’s definition of health, she emphasized that well-being goes beyond the absence of disease. It encompasses an individual’s ability to realize their potential, manage stress, work productively, and contribute meaningfully to their community.
Her lecture identified several workplace mental health challenges, including stress, psychological disorders, negative work environments, and inadequate policies. She also highlighted symptoms of mental health issues, such as persistent sadness, confusion, and social withdrawal, urging employers to pay closer attention to these signs.
To address these challenges, Dr. Adegbite recommended a range of strategies aimed at improving mental health in the workplace. These included the implementation of employee assistance programs, access to mental health services, flexible work arrangements, and mental health awareness training. Additionally, she emphasized the need for supportive leadership approaches and balanced workloads.
The seminar was organized by the UNILAG Branch of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), with the Deputy Registrar of the Directorate of Human Resources and Management Development, Mr. Afolabi Yusuf, representing the Vice-Chancellor at the event. He commended NASU-UNILAG for organizing such an impactful seminar and affirmed the University Management's commitment to fostering a health-friendly working environment for staff.
Comrade Abiodun Noah, NASU-UNILAG Chairman, expressed gratitude to the university leadership for their support and praised Dr. Adegbite for her comprehensive presentation. He also encouraged members of the Union to apply the life-changing insights shared during the seminar.
The event, attended both physically and virtually by many university officials, underscored the growing recognition of mental health as a critical factor in professional settings and personal well-being.
