On Friday, November 29, 2024, the family of the late Professor Sulaiman Owolabi Talabi, a former Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), announced a N5,000,000 (Five Million Naira) scholarship to reward the best graduating students of the department.
The Talabi Mechanical Engineering Award, established by Dr. Sola Talabi, the son of the late Professor Talabi, will provide the top graduates with financial support, and may also offer opportunities for overseas studies and other benefits, which the family is currently working to finalize. Dr. Talabi emphasized the family’s commitment to honoring his father's legacy and supporting the next generation of mechanical engineers at UNILAG.
This announcement was made during a Special Seminar, where Dr. Sola Talabi, a Nuclear Energy Consultant and Academic Director of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, delivered a lecture titled "Nuclear Energy is the New Fire." The seminar highlighted the potential and challenges of nuclear energy, offering insights into innovations and solutions that could make nuclear power more accessible and usable for people.
The event, held at the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Hall, also featured tributes to Professor Talabi, who passed away on October 6, 2024. Distinguished faculty members, including Professor Samson Adeosun, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Adekunle Adelaja, Acting Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor Sodiq Obanisola, former Dean of the Faculty, shared heartfelt memories of the late academic leader. They remembered him as an embodiment of virtues—his leadership, generosity, decency, and unwavering support for his colleagues and students.
Professor Talabi, who joined UNILAG in 1976, was celebrated for his remarkable contributions to the department and his dedication to academic excellence. His passing has left a lasting void in the Mechanical Engineering community at UNILAG, but his legacy will continue through this scholarship, ensuring that his influence will be felt for years to come.
