Benue State Governor Donates N2 Billion for Cancer Treatment Centre at Benue State University Teaching Hospital
Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has made a generous cash donation of two billion naira (N2 Billion) for the establishment of a Cancer Treatment Centre at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital(BSUTH) in Makurdi. Governor Alia emphasized the need for innovative approaches and collective efforts to address the alarming cancer burden in Nigeria.
Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has made a generous cash donation of two billion naira (N2 Billion) for the establishment of a Cancer Treatment Centre at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital(BSUTH) in Makurdi.
The donation was announced during the International Health Investment Summit & Scientific Exhibition, which took place on Friday, July 19, 2024. Themed “Towards Attaining a One-Stop Hospital,” the event featured a keynote address by Dr. Tolulope Adewole, Managing Director of Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) Advanced Medical Services.

Governor Alia emphasized the need for innovative approaches and collective efforts to address the alarming cancer burden in Nigeria. With approximately 124,000 cases and 79,000 deaths annually, cancer ranks as the second-highest cause of mortality in Africa. The Governor’s commitment to quality healthcare delivery and prudent resource utilization reveals his administration’s dedication to the welfare of Benue residents.

Dr. Stephen Terungwa Hwande, Chief Medical Director of Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), received commendation from Governor Alia for spearheading this bold initiative. The Governor urged hospital management to make the International Health Investment Summit and Scientific Exhibition an annual event, fostering collaboration and progress in healthcare.
Former Senator Gabriel Suswam, representing Benue Northeast Senatorial District, expressed appreciation for the invitation to the occasion. He emphasized that development transcends politics and highlighted the benefits of having a cancer treatment center accessible to the people. Suswam called on Benue residents to recognize Governor Alia’s genuine commitment to the state’s progress.
