BUK Ready for Africa as Athletes Depart OAU for 15th WAUG Game

Bayero University, Kano, bids farewell to its finest athletes as the Basketball and Tennis teams embark on their journey to participate in the 15th West Africa University Games (WAUG), hosted at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

In a spirited departure ceremony, the athletes received encouraging words from Prof Rabiu Mohammed, the Director of Sports, and Prof Musa Garba, Chairman of the Sports Consultative Committee (SCC).

 

Expressing determination, the athletes assured the university community that their trip wasn't merely for participation but aimed at returning with prestigious medals to adorn the institution's name.

Prof Mohammed emphasized the significance of embodying sportsmanship, urging the BUK representatives to accept both victory and defeat gracefully, reminding them of their responsibility as goodwill ambassadors of the University.

 

He further motivated the athletes to make the Vice Chancellor's sponsorship worthwhile by showcasing outstanding performances and securing medals.

 

Acknowledging the Vice Chancellor's support, Prof Mohammed praised the sponsorship and hoped for a triumphant return of the BUK contingent.

Prof Musa Garba highlighted the international stature of WAUG, encouraging the BUK athletes to forge camaraderie and establish networks during the competition, which attracts participants from various West African nations.

 

The 15th WAUG is scheduled to kick off in December 2023, with the Minister of Interior, Mr. Olub Tunji-Ojo, set to inaugurate the event. This edition marks the second time Obafemi Awolowo University hosts the games, following the inaugural event held at the University of Ibadan in 1965.

 

As the athletes gear up for the games, Bayero University, Kano, remains hopeful for their remarkable performances, aiming for a display of athletic prowess and sportsmanship on the West African stage.
