Juliet Aigbe, also known as Chef Juls, the Founder of Cakeflair and a University of Lagos (UNILAG) alumna, has championed the idea that artificial intelligence (AI) will enhance, not eliminate jobs. She made this assertion while speaking at an event organized by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), UNILAG Chapter, in collaboration with Lagos State Education District IV, to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, 2024.
Chef Juls
Held at the Faculty of Science Boardroom, UNILAG, the event aimed to empower secondary school girls through AI education, promoting inclusion in the fast-evolving field of technology. Attendees included female secondary school students, their tutors, OWSD members, and other members of the university community.
In her presentation, Chef Juls shared her personal experience of how AI has transformed her work as a baker, improving efficiency and enabling her to create award-winning recipes. She demonstrated these advancements with a live baking session featuring an AI-generated cake recipe. Additionally, Chef Juls introduced her innovations in the confectionery industry, such as millet bread, aimed at reducing Nigeria's dependency on imported wheat and promoting African grains for better nutrition.
Lagos City Senior College
The event also featured a keynote address by Dr. Adekemi Omotubora, a cybersecurity law expert and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Commercial Law, UNILAG. Dr. Omotubora spoke on the importance of inclusive AI education, highlighting how secondary school girls can leverage technology to solve real-world problems in fields like agriculture, healthcare, and finance.
Wesley Girls’ High School
The highlight of the event was a project competition involving six secondary schools in Lagos State, showcasing AI-driven innovations. Wesley Girls’ High School emerged victorious with their project on AI and vocational training tools, scoring 88%. Obele Community Senior High School and Ajigbeda Girls Senior High School followed in second and third places, respectively.
The event concluded with speeches from OWSD Coordinator, Prof. Aderonke Samuel, and Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo, Head of the Department of Computer Science at UNILAG. Prizes were awarded to winners of both the project competition and a quiz session.
