Fresh doctors of the Delta State University (DELSU) have been advised to embrace the challenges ahead of them with courage, humility and a sense of purpose.

They are also expected to uphold the high standard of ethics of the profession and be compassionate in the service to patients and humanity in general.

These pieces of advice were given by the Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, (DELSU), Professor Andy Egwunyenga at the swearing in/oath taking of the 15th set, batch B, of the University’s Qualified Medical Doctors which took place at the Board Room of the College of Health Sciences at Site III.

The Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor (Mrs) Rosemary Okoh, while congratulating the fresh doctors noted that it was a significant milestone from being diligent students to medical care givers.

He urged them to do everything in their power to make a profound impact in the lives of patients and be beacons of hope to the society, adding that they must be good ambassadors of DELSU and give it more fame and visibility. In presenting the inductees to the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), the Ag Dean, faculty of Clinical Sciences, Dr. Harrison Abedi identified the inductees as Somkenechukwu Amolokwu, Onyinye Anwuli, Osamudiame Atawe and Favour Iyamekhare. Others are Ruth Olise, Daniel Omofuoma and Victor Otobore.

The Registrar of the Council, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi who was represented by the Provost, College of Health Sciences, DELSU, Professor Emmanuel Odokuma administered the oath to the young doctors and swore them in into the Medical Profession. He urged them to take every word of the oath, which the doctors personalized, very seriously, as it could be used against them if they violated the oath.

Professor Odokuma urged them to obey “all rules and all laws made for the control of the medical and dental profession in Nigeria”, emphasizing the need for the doctors to respect the “autonomy and dignity” of the patient. The Provost expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for providing the enabling environment for the high quality production of doctors at the institution, adding that DELSU could boast of international scholars as lecturers. The doctors got a set of professional books from the Provost.

The fresh doctors also had a rare opportunity to listen to one of their senior colleagues, Professor John Ohaju-Obodo, a former Provost of the College of Health Sciences at DELSU. Professor Ohaju-Obodo, spoke briefly on ‘Self-actualization’. He identified some self-actualization factors to include focus, goal setting, acquiring new knowledge, building relationships and acknowledging the presence of God in the affairs of men. Professor Ohaju-Obodo, who has put in close to 40 years in the medical profession admonished them to improve themselves constantly as ‘previous glory’ may not advance one’s career.

The Solemn ceremony, attended by parents, relatives and well wishers, also had in attendance the Registrar, Mrs. Rufina Ufiofio, represented by Mr. Emmanuel Okoro, Deputy Registrar (Establishment); the Bursar, Mrs. Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa; the University Librarian, Dr. Mrs. Josephine Onowhakpor, represented by the College Librarian, Dr. (Mrs) Violet Ikolo.
