The induction and Oath-taking Ceremony started with a lecture titled ‘Expanding Horizons: The Evolving Role of Medical Laboratory Scientists in Global Health and Innovation Post-Covid-19’ was held at the Aliko Dangote Auditorium of the Institution on 23rd October 2024.
In his welcome address, the host and Lecturer-in-Charge of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Dr Innocent Iyare, commended parents for investing in young adults, who have made the institution proud. He thanked faculty members, guest lecturer and other guests for making time to grace the occasion of the 4th induction and oath-taking ceremony of the department.
The Ag. Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Dr. Pius Omosigho, commended his team for the determination and the selection of a prompt topic, noting that the lecture will buttress its relevance of medical laboratory science for global projection. He said that having done its best to groom every student in knowledge and character; the institution is eagerly waiting for her products to make the world a better place and make its mentors proud.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Host and Ag. Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Dawood Egbefo first tasked the graduating students to imbibe the attitude of appreciation, while adding that they should forever appreciate their parents who have sacrificed their desires to train them to become better people, he urged them to continue to be good Ambassadors in life, and be grateful to God.
Prof. Egbefo extends his heartfelt gratitude to the Executive Governor of Edo State and Visitor to the University, His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki, for his steadfast support. He said that he is thrilled to share that Edo State University Uzairue now proudly operates its own Teaching Hospital, established through the conversion of the Central Hospital in Auchi by the Edo State Government, that it marks the first state-owned teaching hospital in the region, and that the transformation has greatly enhanced training facilities for the medical students while significantly elevating healthcare standards in Edo North and the surrounding areas.
While expressing that the presence of health professionals is significant in promoting and building the health system, he extends his warm appreciation to the Commissioners of Education, Dr. (Mrs) Joan Osa Oviawe and the Ministry of Health for the vital role they have played in the development of the University.
Furthermore, extends his appreciation to the Guest Lecturer, Registrar and CEO of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria. He said that the induction and oath-taking ceremony of thirty-four inductees is reminded of the profound responsibilities that come with being a professional.
The Guest lecturer, Dr Godswill Chikwendu Okara, Registrar/Secretary General of West Africa Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science in his lecture stated that the Medical Laboratory Science as defined by the MLSCN Law section 29 (a) & (b) is the practice involving the analysis of human or animal tissues, body fluids, excretions, production of biological, design and fabrication of equipment for medical laboratory diagnosis, treatment and research, including medical microbiology, clinical chemistry, chemical pathology, haematology, blood transfusion science, virology, histopathology, histochemistry, immunology, cytogetics, exfoliative cytology, parasitology, forensic science, molecular biology, laboratory management and any other related subject as may be approved by the Council.
In his official remarks, the Guest Speaker, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Prof. Tosan Erhabor expressed excitement on the 4th edition of induction and oath-taking of 34 inductees, thanked organizers for their painstaking efforts in ensuring the success of this event, told them to count themselves lucky for seeking to join the profession at a time that its most productive, like a beautiful maiden full of virtue and values, and so well-sought after, added that the superficial metaphorical expression does not vitiate the deeper core of the hard work and determination invested by the inductees and their parents and guardians, which have brought them this moment of recognition.
He, therefore, salutes the inductees, especially the overall best-graduating student, Israel Oshioke Osikwemeh, from the Chemical Pathology Specialty, their parents and guardians, as well as the lecturers who teamed up with them to seek first the kingdom of success and excellence.
