Effective mentorship key to academic excellence - FULafia VC

The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, has said that mentorship will enhance academic excellence in the University.

The vice-chancellor stated so while addressing participants at the Maiden Mentorship Forum organised by the Faculty of Management Science, FULafia.

The vice-chancellor, who was the keynote speaker at the event, said that effective academic mentoring and guidance would propel beneficiaries to excellence in their research areas. 

He said: “Mentoring is a process for informal transmission of knowledge and support perceived by relevant work, carrier or professional development. Mentoring entails informal communication usually face-to-face between a person who perceived to have mental relevant knowledge, wisdom or experience and the person who is perceived to have less knowledge called mentee."

While recommending the institutionalisation of academic mentoring, Abdul Rahman said that he has mandated all faculties in the University to create what he called “academic forum for innovation and development" to achieve sustainable and inclusive development.

According to him, mentorship paves way for a senior lecturer to mentor the younger academics in the university.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Dean, Faculty of Management Science, Professor Muhammed Isa Kida, said the mentorship forum was organised to stress the importance of mentorship in Nigerian universities.

The programme, which was held at the University’s Old Senate Chamber, permanent Site Campus, was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Partnerships, Professor Ismaila Dykes, Bursar, Mr Daniel Wilson, Librarian, Professor Abiyedun Iyoro,  and other senior academics and guests.
