The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier Gen YD Ahmed, has emphatically stated that the welfare of corps members is a top priority and non-negotiable, while reaffirming that the Mandatory one year national service would not be scrapped.

Brigadier Ahmed made this statement in Abuja on Friday during the opening ceremony of the 2024 NYSC Information and Public Relations Officers’ Training Workshop. He asserted that the scheme is always prepared to safeguard the welfare of corps members, with their security and well-being being of utmost importance.

In his words, “As the Director General of NYSC, I can assure you that we are always ready to protect the welfare of corps members and we have always done our best to make sure their security is guaranteed and welfare well taken care of. Everything that has to do with their welfare is what we’re after and equally their security. We take the security of corps members as our priority."

The NYSC DG also addressed calls for the scrapping of the NYSC, suggesting that those advocating for its dissolution had not experienced the benefits of the scheme firsthand. He said, “I can’t believe those that say the NYSC should be scrapped. Those agitating for its scrapping have not participated in the Scheme."

Brigadier Ahmed further highlighted the scheme’s achievements in various sectors including agriculture, health, education, and security consciousness. He proudly stated, “We have always been active in agriculture. We have NYSC farms here in Kwali Abuja, we have over 20,000 hectares. We have a farm in Ebonyi at Abakaliki, we are very active there. We have a farm in Bauchi, where we are very active.”
