The Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) was on Friday the scene of a regrettable incident where some accident victims, while receiving care, reportedly turned violent and physically assaulted health workers.
In a statement, the Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, strongly condemned the act, describing it as unacceptable and a direct threat to the safety of healthcare delivery in the state. He confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Nigeria Police Force, with investigations and legal actions already underway.
Filani stressed that violence, harassment, or intimidation against doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals would not be tolerated under any circumstance, noting that these workers operate under strenuous conditions to save lives. “An attack on them is not only an attack on individuals but also a threat to our collective well-being and access to timely, quality healthcare,” he said.
He further appealed to residents of Ekiti State to exercise restraint, patience, and mutual respect in moments of crisis, while seeking redress through lawful and civil channels. According to him, the State Government under Governor Biodun Oyebanji remains fully committed to protecting both patients and health workers, working closely with security agencies and hospital management to prevent a recurrence.
The Commissioner warned that those found guilty of attacking health workers will face the full weight of the law, reiterating that hospitals must remain sanctuaries of healing and compassion, not grounds for violence.
