Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sokoto State University (SSU) to strengthen collaborative research in solid minerals, medical geology, bioenergy, waste management and environmental sustainability.

The agreement was formalised on Monday, July 6, 2026, at Sokoto State University as part of efforts to advance research, innovation and collaborations aimed at addressing Nigeria's developmental challenges.
Representing the NSUK Vice-Chancellor, Sa'adatu Hassan Liman, was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Linkages), K'tso Nghargbu, who led a delegation from the university to the 8th Combined Convocation Ceremony of Sokoto State University before participating in the MoU signing ceremony.
The agreement was signed by Muhammed Bello Yerima and Associate Professor K'tso Nghargbu on behalf of Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman, marking the beginning of a partnership aimed at leveraging the research strengths of both institutions for national development.
Under the partnership, both universities will collaborate on multidisciplinary research in:
- Solid minerals exploration.
- Sustainable mining.
- Medical geology.
- Bioenergy development.
- Waste management.
- Environmental protection.

A major component of the collaboration is the proposed establishment of a Joint Research Centre to investigate Nigeria's mineral resources, particularly the gold-bearing corridor stretching from Sokoto State to Nasarawa State.
The research initiative will also focus on addressing public health and environmental issues associated with mining activities, including heavy metal pollution, while promoting responsible resource exploitation and sustainable development in mining communities.
The universities will leverage NSUK's research centres and innovation platforms to develop evidence-based solutions capable of supporting government policies, attracting investment, and improving the productivity and sustainability of Nigeria's mining sector.
Both institutions also agreed to pursue catalyst funding from the Federal Government and development partners to support collaborative research, technology transfer, capacity building and innovation-driven projects under the partnership.

NSUK said the collaboration reflects its commitment to expanding strategic national and international partnerships, strengthening its research ecosystem, and delivering practical solutions to socio-economic and environmental challenges through research and innovation.
