EPAC-UNIDEL Inaugurates New Members, Calls for Collective Action on Environmental Sustainability

The Environmental Protection Advocacy Club of the University of Delta, Agbor, EPAC-UNIDEL, has called on staff, students and stakeholders to take deliberate steps toward environmental sustainability as part of efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.

Speaking during a welcome address to new members on campus, the President of EPAC-UNIDEL, Dr. Paul Diagboya, said the club was established to translate environmental consciousness into practical action within and beyond the university community.

"You are here because you matter to our vision. You are relevant to our mission," the President stated. "EPAC-UNIDEL exists to pursue key aspects of the SDGs, and we need committed people to drive that mandate."

Dr. Diagboya urged members to join the EPAC Research Group, EPAC-RG, describing it as the shortest pathway to becoming a life member of the club. According to him, EPAC-RG will bridge "knowledge to skill, skill to productivity, and productivity to a green economy."

He noted that environmental protection is not optional, given humanity's daily dependence on air, water, food and health resources provided by the earth. 

"The environment is like karma. It does not forget. If we pollute, we get sick. If we protect, we live well. If we waste, we lose wealth. If we conserve, we create opportunities," he said.

The President outlined EPAC-UNIDEL's focus areas to include research on local environmental problems, training in recycling, composting and sustainable farming, and community outreach in schools and markets. He added that the club would document its impact to enable replication of its model in other institutions.

He challenged the UNIDEL community to lead by example in waste reduction, tree planting and maintaining a clean environment, while also inviting external partners to collaborate. 

"Environmental challenges do not respect gates or boundaries. The solutions must also be without boundaries," he said.

Dr. Diagboya further gave a three-point charge to members: remain active in the group, join EPAC-RG, and take at least one environmental action in their office, department or home within the week.

The event had in attendance the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Eboh; Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Esther Akpojuvie; Bursar, Dr. Sunny Ikeogwu; Deans, Directors, HODs, leaders of ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT, patrons, matrons, and members of the press.
