Expelled UNN Medical Student Claims Innocence in Exam Malpractice Case, Demands Justice

A medical student from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has taken to social media to decry what he describes as an unjust expulsion over alleged examination malpractice. 

The student, who prefers to remain anonymous, shared his side of the story on X (formerly Twitter) through the account @injusticeunec. 

In his emotional post, he said the accusation came as a shock, claiming there was no valid evidence to support the school’s decision. 

He described the experience as traumatic, stating: 

“My mental health has been messed up by the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC). My right to fair hearing has been denied. But I will never give up until I get justice.” 

The student said he was in his third year, preparing to transition into 400 level, when everything changed after writing his second MBBS Physiology exam on November 1, 2024. 

Shortly afterward, he received a call informing him he’d been accused of cheating. 

He claimed classmates had submitted petitions against him, and he was summoned before a disciplinary panel. 

“I had no idea what I was walking into,” he said. “They showed me my essay script — my handwriting, my answers — but claimed it wasn’t an official exam booklet. I was stunned. 

I used only the materials provided by the invigilator.” He maintained that he signed the attendance register twice and had no access to any unauthorized exam materials. 

However, the panel reportedly became aggressive during questioning, asking if he had connections with a lecturer named Mr. Ossai. “They accused me of buying the script from him. I told them I had no such dealings. 

But they refused to believe me,” he recounted. According to him, he left the hearing feeling broken and disrespected — and still, no tangible evidence had been presented. The aftermath was even more devastating. 

His results in Physiology, Anatomy, and Biochemistry were withheld, and he later discovered that more than 60 students across the Medicine and Medical Rehabilitation faculties were similarly affected. 

“I’m speaking out because silence enables abuse of power. There was no fair trial, no chance to appeal. The Dean, Prof. Esom, told the Senate that we exchanged scripts during the exam. That never happened.” 

The student alleged that the case was finally brought before the university’s Senate on May 28, 2025 — seven months later — where a blanket decision was made to expel all 59 accused students without granting them an opportunity to defend themselves. 

He concluded his post by calling for accountability and reforms within the university’s disciplinary system.
