FASU Vice-Chancellors’ Forum Highlights University Sports as Catalyst for African Development

Held as part of the 11th All Africa University Games (FASU) Lagos 2024, the event brought together Vice-Chancellors and sports officials from across the continent.
Under the theme "Empowering University Sports: Pathways to Excellence," discussions centered on the transformative power of university sports in promoting African cohesion and development. Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, President of the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) and Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, commended the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) for co-hosting the Games. He praised university sports for nurturing talent and building lasting interactions among African universities.
Dr. Sobhy urged Vice-Chancellors to collaborate beyond academics to promote African unity through sports. His call was echoed by WAUSF President Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko and NUGA President Dr. Mohammed Bawa, who stressed the need for increased resource allocation to university sports to enhance social interaction among students.
In her remarks, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola expressed optimism that the FASU Games would strengthen ties among African universities and deliver benefits beyond sports. She assured visiting stakeholders of a memorable experience at FASU Lagos 2024.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Decius Chipande of the African Union Sports Council, highlighted the importance of aligning sports development with the African Union’s Agenda 2063. He called for comprehensive policy plans to strengthen African university sports as a vehicle for continental progress.
The seminar provided a platform for key discussions on university sports as an indispensable tool for youth and institutional development. The FASU Games officially begin on September 21, 2024, with the Opening Ceremony at the UNILAG Sports Complex.
