Federal University Lokoja Secures 24-Hour Power Supply Through Landmark REA/AfDB Solar Initiative
The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) in Kogi State has joined the ranks of Nigerian universities benefiting from uninterrupted electricity, following the successful commissioning of a 1.72MWp-4MWh hybrid solar farm under the Rural Electrification Agency’s (REA) Energizing Education Programme (EEP), with funding support from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The large-scale solar installation now ensures round-the-clock, reliable, and renewable energy for FUL, strategically positioning the institution for enhanced academic productivity and global competitiveness. The project, which serves the University’s main campus at Felele, marks a significant milestone in sustainable energy adoption for Nigeria’s higher education sector.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, during a working inspection of the energized facilities, confirmed that the solar farm has been supplying power consistently over the past few weeks. He expressed satisfaction with the completion of the project despite initial challenges and lauded the contractors for delivering the initiative efficiently and on schedule.
Professor Akinwumi also thanked the Federal Government, the REA, and the AfDB for selecting FUL as one of eight public universities nationwide to benefit from the over $200 million intervention, emphasizing the project’s critical role in the University’s ongoing growth and infrastructural development.

This landmark achievement not only enhances academic operations at FUL but also underscores the University’s commitment to sustainable and renewable energy solutions, reinforcing its position as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing institutions of higher learning.
