The Federal Government has approved N4 billion each for 12 selected universities to rehabilitate engineering workshops and procure modern equipment, part of a strategic initiative to strengthen practical engineering and technology education nationwide.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on Monday during the inauguration of the Implementation Committee on TETFund Special High-Impact Intervention Projects in Abuja.

According to Dr. Alausa, the intervention targets the faculties of engineering and technology in Federal Universities of Technology and conventional universities, with funds allocated to either upgrade existing facilities or construct new workshops where necessary.

Dr. Alausa said, “The High-Impact Intervention Project is a strategic initiative aimed at upgrading laboratories, workshops, and research facilities, positioning our institutions as hubs of innovation and practical problem-solving. However, funding alone does not guarantee results. Success depends on effective implementation, strict adherence to standards, transparency, and accountability, which is why this committee is both necessary and timely.”

He added that the initiative will provide modern workshops, advanced laboratories, and industry-relevant equipment, enhancing the employability of engineering graduates. Additionally, N20 billion has been set aside in the 2026 TETFund guidelines for upgrading facilities in other selected institutions.

The minister tasked the committee with monitoring project execution, ensuring compliance with approved specifications and timelines, evaluating outcomes, identifying challenges, and submitting objective reports to guide policy decisions.

TETFund Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, praised President Tinubu for approving reforms to transform Nigeria’s education landscape and commended the National Assembly for efforts to restore first- and second-generation universities to global standards.

Speaking for the committee, Ali Rabiu, President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and committee chairman, pledged commitment to the successful implementation of the project, describing the assignment as a “distinct honour” and expressing appreciation for the confidence placed in the committee and its members.

The intervention marks a major step in the federal government’s effort to strengthen hands-on engineering training and ensure Nigeria’s universities produce graduates equipped to meet modern industry demands.
