President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Government to take over Nok University, Kachia, Kaduna State, following a court order for its final forfeiture, and transform it into the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.

Vice President Kashim Shettima made the announcement during the formal handover of the institution’s assets to the Federal Government by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. This development fulfills a promise made to the people of Southern Kaduna.

A statement released on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, confirmed the transition, highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to inclusivity and national development.

Speaking at the handover event, Vice President Shettima emphasized the administration’s dedication to fostering unity and progress in Nigeria. He quoted Martin Luther King Jr., underscoring the importance of coexistence, and acknowledged key figures instrumental in the transition process, including General Martin Luther Agwai (retd.), Bishop Matthew Kukah, Justice Kumai Akaahs, and Senator Sunday Marshall Katung.

“This is a great day for Kaduna State and Nigeria. The greater credit goes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing this initiative. The President has already directed the Minister of Education to include the university in the 2025 budget so that by September, it can admit its first set of students,” Shettima stated.

Beyond education, the Vice President reiterated the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development in Southern Kaduna, particularly in road construction. He assured that President Tinubu’s government would complement ongoing state efforts by awarding contracts for key roads in the region.

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the realization of the Federal University of Applied Sciences project, describing it as a significant achievement for the state and the country at large. He also commended Vice President Shettima for his steadfast support in making the initiative a reality.

Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, lauded President Tinubu’s decision, noting that the establishment of the university would have lasting positive impacts on education, job creation, and local economic development.

“This university will provide access to quality education, create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the social and cultural fabric of our community. This is the vision that Mr. President has set in motion today, and we look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to bring it to life,” Katung remarked.

The transition of Nok University to the Federal University of Applied Sciences marks a historic milestone in expanding educational opportunities in Southern Kaduna and aligns with the federal government’s broader agenda to enhance higher education in Nigeria.
