Myschoolnews learnt that the federal government has directed all polytechnics in the country to close from February 22 to March 14, 2023, for the 2023 elections.

This was days after the National Universities Commission (NUC) directed universities to close campuses. 

The Ministry of Education issued a circular directing the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Professor Idris Bugaje, to communicate the directive to rectors and provosts of polytechnics.

The February 10, letter, which was signed by Folorunsho, I.O. for the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, indicates that the decision was reached in view of security concerns.

The letter reads in part: “In view of concerns expressed on the security of staff, students and property of our respective institutions, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has following extensive consultations with the relevant security agencies directed that all polytechnics be shut down and academic activities suspended between Wednesday, 22nd February, and Tuesday, 14th March, 2023.”

The letter further reads: “It is necessary to inform them so that appropriate adjustments are made in their academic calendar to accommodate this three weeks’ loss.”
