FG’s Student Loan Scheme, a good idea, says UNILORIN VC

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has said that the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2024, which was recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a good idea and well appreciated.

Prof. Egbewole, who made the observation in a chat with UNILORIN BULLETIN in his office last Monday (May 27, 2024), however, counselled that transparency is key to the success of the scheme.

The Vice Chancellor, who noted that the student loan is not a new concept in Nigeria, described its reintroduction by the current administration as a positive step towards addressing the financial barriers that hinder many students from pursuing higher education.

While acknowledging the potential of the scheme, Prof. Egbewole explained the importance of transparency in its implementation. He opined that the success of the initiative hinges on clear guidelines, fair allocation of funds, and robust accountability mechanisms.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria cautioned that the scheme should prioritise merit-based selection criteria over regional or political considerations, saying that the loans should be awarded based on academic merit rather than affiliations.

He said, “We must prioritise the interests of the students and the integrity of the education system”, adding that “loans should be awarded to all deserving Nigerians irrespective of their backgrounds”.
