Flourish Olaoye Wins 19th Bishop Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition
Flourish Olaoye of Christ the King International School, Gbagada, Lagos, has emerged as the winner of the 19th edition of the Bishop Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Nigerian secondary schools.
Flourish Olaoye of Christ the King International School, Gbagada, Lagos, has emerged as the winner of the 19th edition of the Bishop Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Nigerian secondary schools. The competition, which received 551 entries, saw 341 disqualified due to various infractions.
Olaoye excelled in the competition, scoring 71% in the initial round and 75% in the final round held at The Redeemed Evangelical Mission International Headquarters, Gbagada, Lagos. Her impressive performance earned her an average score of 73%.
The second place was secured by Nora Femi-Lawal of Chrisland High School, Lekki, who achieved scores of 65% in the first round and 64% in the final round, resulting in an average score of 64.5%. Olayimika Durotimi of Corona Secondary School, Agbara, placed third with scores of 62% and 60% in the respective rounds, culminating in an average score of 61%.
Chief Examiner, Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, praised the top three winners for their thoughtful approach to the topics and their command of the English language. She also acknowledged the growing impact of AI tools and online essay services on education, urging vigilance in adapting to these technological advancements.
Prof. Adimora-Ezeigbo commented, “As we reflect on the direction scientific advancements are leading us, the seven students invited to the finals offer a glimmer of hope. They have engaged with issues using both their hearts and minds, employing original thought within the framework of knowledge production methodologies. We must encourage them by sharpening their critical thinking skills and recognizing their contributions.”
In recognition of their achievements, Flourish Olaoye will receive a cheque for N500,000, a trophy, and a plaque, while her school will be awarded a set of computers. Nora Femi-Lawal will take home a cheque for N250,000, a plaque, and a computer set for her school. Olayimika Durotimi will receive a cheque for N150,000, a plaque, and a computer set for her school. The remaining finalists will each receive a consolation prize of N20,000.
The winners and their schools will be honored at the 23rd Bishop Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture Series, scheduled for Thursday, September 5, 2024, in Lagos. The event will feature a lecture by Barrister Kanu Agabi and will be chaired by Mr. Atedo Peterside, President and Founder of ANAP Foundation.
The Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition, established in 2004, is part of the celebrations for the birthday of the Presiding Bishop of TREM, Dr. Mike Okonkwo.
