On May 11, 2024, the convocation arena at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will be filled with joy and inspiration as Greaty Onah-ifeoma celebrates the culmination of an incredible journey. Surrounded by her loved ones, including Augustina Nnedinso Onah and 20 others, Greaty will receive her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology, marking an achievement that encapsulates years of dedication, resilience, and sheer determination.

Greaty’s academic journey has been anything but ordinary. She earned her Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Microbiology from the University of Abuja, a Master of Science (M.Sc) in Pharmaceutical Microbiology, and a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Education. However, her pursuit of a Ph.D. came with unique challenges—being a wife and mother of two while maintaining her professional roles.

“I did my B.Sc, M.Sc, and PGDE programs as a single lady, so the stress wasn't too much. But during my Ph.D. program, I had two pregnancies and juggled countless responsibilities at work and home. It was overwhelming at times,” she shares.

Greaty’s story is one of endurance. From working late into the night while nursing a baby, to balancing job deadlines and academia, she faced it all with grace. Colleagues and friends often marveled at her strength, noticing how she navigated between labs with a visible pregnancy belly and still managed to stay on top of her work.

“There was a time the stress was so much that I considered giving up. But with the support of my husband, my mom, and many others, I kept going. This Ph.D. convocation is going to be like a wedding celebration for us,” she exclaims.
