Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has strengthened its push for research-driven academic excellence through a new strategic partnership with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Yaba, Lagos.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally signed on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, by the Vice-Chancellor of FUL, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, and the Director-General of NIMR, Professor John Oladapo Obafunwa, marking a structured collaboration aimed at deepening research capacity, innovation, and institutional development.
The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between both institutions in key academic and research areas, with a focus on strengthening scientific output and expanding opportunities for staff and students.
Key areas of collaboration include:
- Staff and student exchange programmes
- Internship placements for students
- Sabbatical opportunities for academic staff
- Joint research projects
- Co-sponsored conferences
- Collaborative book and academic publications
- Establishment of liaison structures for implementation of agreed initiatives

During the signing ceremony, Professor Ibileye described NIMR as a national institution of global relevance, stressing that the partnership would significantly enhance the university’s academic ecosystem.
He noted that the collaboration would expose students to specialized research environments and create opportunities for skill development, joint innovation, and academic exchange.
Professor Ibileye also emphasized the importance of co-sponsored academic engagements, stating that such initiatives would strengthen knowledge production and institutional visibility.
In his remarks, Professor Obafunwa welcomed the partnership and expressed optimism about its potential impact. He commended FUL’s leadership for pursuing strategic collaborations that build on institutional strengths and promote continuity in research advancement.
He affirmed NIMR’s readiness to work closely with the university, noting that operational details and implementation frameworks would be refined through continuous engagement between both institutions.
As part of the visit, the FUL delegation was taken on a tour of NIMR’s research facilities, including the Centre for Human Virology and Genomics, as well as laboratories dedicated to HIV/AIDS research, viral disease surveillance, vaccine development, and biomedical innovation.
The tour provided firsthand exposure to NIMR’s advanced scientific infrastructure and reinforced its role as a leading hub for medical research in Nigeria and beyond.

The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, established from early medical research activities dating back to the 1920s, remains a central institution in Nigeria’s public health research and innovation ecosystem.
The partnership is expected to accelerate FUL’s research profile and deepen its engagement in cutting-edge scientific inquiry.
