FULafia Vice chancellor calls for prioritisation of cultural studies

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia),  Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, has called on Nigeria universities, in particular, and Africa, in general, to prioritise cultural studies to help the young generation understand the cultural complexities and social dynamics of the society.

The vice-chancellor made the during the first public lecture of the newly established Centre for Cultural Studies (CCS) at the University.

The event was held at the Mallam Adamu Adamu Lecture and Office Complex, Permanent Site Campus of the University. 

The vice-chancellor said the centre was established to undertake research, document, materials and propagate the culture and civilisation of Nigerian nationalities for global consumption and nation-building. 

While commending the centre for starting its operation on a good footing, Abdul Rahman called on stakeholders to partner with the University in promoting the nation's cultural heritage, saying: "It is the only way we can have proper understanding of our country and its people.”

In his address, the chairman of the occasion, His Royal Highness Justice Ahmed Ubangari Alaku (rtd), Aren Eggon, commended the institution for its foresight in establishing the centre and organising a lecture to sensitise the public.

He said: "The event was timely considering the overall significance of culture to people."

The Aren Eggon called for the harnessing of the nation's cultural diversity for enduring overall development. 

In a Lecture titled: "Culture and Development in a Globalised World,” the lecturer, Prof. Ogbogbo Christopher, called on governments at all levels and heads of higher institutions across the country to initiate programmes to revive the country's rich cultural heritages.

He noted that promoting cultural heritage would enhance national unity and development. 

In her welcome address, the Director of the Centre, Prof. Zara Kwaghe, said the lecture was organised to draw  attention and sensitise the public on the activities of the centre in FULafia.

Prof. Zara used the occasion to express gratitude to the vice-chancellor and members of his Management team for their support to the centre and ensuring success of the lecture.
