FUNAAB Sets Pace with First University-Based Driving School in Nigeria

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has broken new ground with the commissioning of a modern Driving School established by its Alumni Association, a first-of-its-kind initiative among Nigerian universities.

Commissioned today, February 11, 2026, the project was described as a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening road safety culture and expanding practical skill development within the University Community.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olusegun Idowu, said the initiative goes beyond infrastructure. “This is more than the commissioning of a Driving School. It reflects partnership, enterprise, and a shared commitment to social development,” he stated, noting that the project demonstrated how alumni bodies can contribute meaningfully to institutional growth.

Earlier in his Welcome Address, the Global President of the FUNAAB Alumni Association, Otunba Bolaji Gbadamosi, stated that the programme emphasised the importance of equipping students with life skills in addition to their academic qualifications.

With a student population exceeding 25,000, he explained that the structured training, combining classroom instruction with practical driving sessions would promote responsible driving habits within and beyond the campus.

Otunba Gbadamosi further stated that the school would be managed by Mr. Bamidele Olalere, CEO of Olabam, also an alumnus of the University and a driving education professional with over 25 years of experience. Training fees are subsidised at ₦40,000 for students and ₦55,000 for staff, compared to the standard ₦65,000 rate. The school would also assist participants in processing Driver’s Licences and provide refresher courses.

Speaking also, the Assistant Route Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Ademola Adesanya, emphasised that driving schools play a critical role in curbing road accidents.

“Driving schools are not just for obtaining licences. They are essential for building knowledgeable and responsible drivers. Proper learning is key to proper driving,” he said.

University officials, including the Registrar, Dr. Titus Adeniyi, and the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Festus Adeosun, commended the alumni body for what they described as a historic and forward-looking intervention.

Before the Commissioning of the Driving School, the Global Alumni President took the Vice-Chancellor's representative and other Principal Officers including top Alumni executives on a guided tour of the ongoing construction of the Alumni Guest House behind the Alumni Building.
