FUNAAB, University of Rwanda Seal Strategic Pact to Drive Africa-Focused Agricultural Research

Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta has expanded its continental research footprint with a strategic partnership move involving the University of Rwanda, targeting joint solutions to food security, climate resilience, and sustainable agriculture.

The engagement, formalised during high-level discussions on April 9, 2026, at the Rwandan institution’s Kigali campus, brought together senior academics and policy drivers from both universities to define actionable collaboration areas aligned with Africa’s development priorities.

Leading the Nigerian delegation, Kazeem Bello, Director of FUNAAB’s Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research, positioned the partnership as a shift from fragmented research efforts to integrated, outcome-driven collaboration across African institutions.

On the Rwandan side, Djamali Nambajimana described the initiative as execution-focused, noting that both institutions have already identified practical entry points capable of delivering near-term impact.

Priority areas include joint research in food systems and environmental sustainability, development of cold-chain logistics for post-harvest efficiency, and expansion of aquaculture systems, particularly catfish production, a critical protein source across multiple African markets.

The framework also incorporates structured academic mobility, including staff and student exchange programmes and credit transfer systems designed to ease cross-border learning—an area widely acknowledged as underdeveloped within African higher education.

Beyond conventional research domains, the collaboration extends to gender inclusion in agricultural science and the integration of indigenous knowledge systems into formal research frameworks, reflecting a broader shift toward context-driven innovation.

For FUNAAB, the Rwanda alliance reinforces its positioning as a specialised agricultural institution leveraging expertise to build transnational research networks. Backed by Vice-Chancellor Babatunde Kehinde, the university is increasingly adopting a South–South collaboration model, prioritising partnerships within Africa to address region-specific challenges.

Both institutions have outlined immediate next steps, including drafting a Memorandum of Understanding, establishing a joint technical working group, and rolling out pilot projects with defined funding pathways. A reciprocal visit by the Rwandan delegation to Nigeria is also planned to accelerate implementation.

The partnership reflects a broader strategic shift among African universities toward self-reliance, with both institutions aligning around a shared objective of strengthening local production systems while contributing to global research discourse.
