Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) fresh graduate Awwal Adebisi and team shine at Innovate for Youths Designathon, an event organized with a focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Awwal Adebisi, a fresh graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the  Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has achieved an impressive feat alongside his talented team,  Breakfree, by clinching  the second position in the prestigious Innovate for Youths Designathon.

The event was organized by The Innovation and Design Thinking Academy (TIDA) and Our Voice As Light (OVAL), with a focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The competition held at the UI Hotels, University of Ibadan, from the 7th to 9th of July 2023. 

 Apart from Adebisi other members of  Team  Breakfree  include Adesola Maryam Adegbite, a student of the University of Ilorin studying Pharmacy and serving as the team Lead; Paul, another Pharmacy student from the University of Ilorin; and Samson Tobiloba Samuel, a Dentistry student and the incumbent Student Union President at the University of Ibadan. 

During the intense 72-hour-long designathon, Team Breakfree conceptualized a mobile application aimed at supporting young individuals in overcoming substance addiction and abuse, contributing directly to SDG 3 - Good Health and Wellbeing. 

Awwal Adebisi shared his exhilarating experience at the designathon, where only 27 teams out of 245 applicants from across the country were chosen to compete. The event provided a unique opportunity for collaboration among individuals from diverse backgrounds and different educational institutions.

 Forming a team with strangers initially seemed daunting, but the 72-hour journey proved to be both impactful and rewarding. Adebisi  expressed deep gratitude for the exceptional team he had the privilege of working with. 

Offering advice to fellow students, he emphasized the abundance of opportunities available, waiting to be tapped into.

According to him ,  "Being well-informed and continuously honing one's skills are vital in making the most of these prospects. With dedication and effort, every student can access and benefit from these opportunities."

Awwal was also one of the Microsoft Learn Students Ambassadors that organized the largest Power Platform event in Nigeria, GPPB Akure that was held at the Obafemi Awolowo Auditorium in the Federal University of Technology, Akure on the 7th and 8th of July, 2023. He led the design team for the power platform bootcamp. 

Team Breakfree deserves commendation for their outstanding achievement and innovative approach in addressing critical social issues. Their success stands as an inspiration to the entire student community, encouraging them to pursue excellence and seize the opportunities that come their way.
