On October 30, 2023, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Mr. Olaf Scholz, embarked on a historic visit to the University of Lagos (Unilag), where he and his delegation engaged in significant discussions and exchanges. The meetings took place in the MAD House, a creative incubation space designed to foster innovative ideas into tangible products.

Notably, the German delegation arrived at Unilag via a unique mode of transport, as they journeyed to the university by three boats from Victoria Island, docking at the Unilag jetty. This marked the first instance of a delegation entering Unilag through the picturesque Lagoon front.

Upon their arrival, Chancellor Scholz was warmly welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, and her top management team. Together, they strolled from the jetty to the MAD House, where Mr. Scholz and a portion of his delegation engaged in a one-and-a-half-hour meeting and dialogue with young Nigerian entrepreneurs.

Simultaneously, a second meeting unfolded between the Unilag leadership and the remaining members of the German delegation, which included Dr. Andreas Görgen (Secretary General, Office of the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media), Prof. Thoko Kaime (University of Bayreuth), Mr. Emeka Ogboh (a renowned sound and video artist and DAAD alumnus), along with others, including Dr. Gerald Heusing (DAAD-Lecturer/Associate Professor at Unilag). The discussions centered on exploring the prospects and realities of Nigerian-German collaborations in the domains of higher education and culture.
