Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto Appoints Prof. M. B. Yerima as Acting Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University

His Excellency, Alh. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, Ph.D., FCNA, Governor of Sokoto State, has approved the appointment of Prof. Bello Mohammed Yerima as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University (SSU).

His Excellency, Alh. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, Ph.D., FCNA, Governor of Sokoto State, has approved the appointment of Prof. Bello Mohammed Yerima as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University (SSU). This appointment, effective from 23rd August 2024, was announced in an official statement signed by Mal. Abubakar Bawa, Press Secretary to the Governor.

Prof. Yerima’s appointment follows the departure of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Garba, MFR, who has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) by the university’s Governing Council.

Born on 21st August 1967 in Gigane Town, Gwadabawa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Prof. Yerima’s academic journey began at Magajin Rafi Primary School, Tudun Wada Sokoto, and continued through Giginya Memorial College and Government College Sokoto (now Nagarta College). He later joined the Matriculation Programme at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto in 1988, where he earned his B.Sc. in Microbiology in 1994.

Prof. Yerima’s professional career commenced in 1995 at Usmanu Danfodiyo University as a Graduate Assistant. Over the years, he rose through the academic ranks, becoming a Professor in 2016. He also pursued advanced studies, earning an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Applied Microbiology from the University of Jos in 2001 and 2012, respectively.

Prof. Yerima served at UDUS for 18 years before moving to Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State in 2013. Driven by a deep sense of patriotism, he later returned to Sokoto State University to contribute to its development. Upon his return, he was appointed Deputy Dean, marking the beginning of his latest chapter of service to his home state.

As the new Acting Vice-Chancellor of SSU, Prof. Yerima is expected to continue the legacy of academic excellence and lead the institution towards greater achievements.
