In a remarkable demonstration of youth leadership and educational excellence, Amara Nwuneli, a Year 2 student in the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme at Greensprings School, has been announced as the African regional winner of the globally acclaimed Earth Prize Awards. 

This prestigious award recognizes young changemakers developing creative and practical solutions to pressing environmental challenges. 

Selected from a highly competitive pool of over 10,000 students worldwide, Amara received a $12,500 cash award for her impactful work through her youth-led non-governmental organisation, Preserve Our Roots. 

The initiative is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness, sustainable living, and climate education among young people across communities in Nigeria and beyond. 

Her project not only focused on ecological preservation but also emphasized community involvement, youth empowerment, and long-term environmental stewardship.

Her exceptional vision, innovation, and unwavering dedication to the cause of sustainability have not only inspired her peers but also captured the attention of global environmental leaders. 

In a parallel honour, her teacher and mentor, Mr. Gbenga Ogunlade, received the Earth Prize Educator of the Year Award alongside a $2,500 reward. 

The award celebrates educators who play pivotal roles in nurturing students’ talents and guiding them toward meaningful environmental action. 

Amara nominated Ogunlade for his consistent support, strategic mentorship, and ability to instill a passion for environmental responsibility in his students.
