18-year-old Briana Watts has secured acceptance from 12 universities across the United States, despite the significant challenges of being homeless.

Briana and her mother, Bridgette Gibbs, lived in homeless shelters throughout her high school years at Bronxwood Preparatory Academy.

Their journey was filled with difficulties, particularly due to Bridgette’s struggle with addiction. Reflecting on their past, Bridgette shared, “Life was good until she was 8 years old. That’s when I got laid off from my job. I had to go home and tell my kids that was my last check. That, accompanied with the depression, I started using [drugs]. It kind of spiraled out of control.”

Despite these hardships, Bridgette was determined to find a solution, so she relapsed from drug addiction.  “I don’t even know how I’m going to fix this, but I’m going to fix this. I’m going to get clean, and that’s what I did. I got back up. And it was not easy,” she said.

The family faced another setback when Bridgette’s mother passed away, forcing them to move into a shelter. However, Briana’s determination never wavered. Her hard work and perseverance paid off, leading to her remarkable academic achievements and multiple university acceptances.
