How UDUS MSSN Tutorial Class is Putting New Students on the Right Track

Since February 2024, when Fatimoh Aliyu began her 4-year course journey at the department of Pure Chemistry, Faculty of Chemical and Life Sciences in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, (UDUS), she has been facing not one but many serious challenges that posed threat to her academic sojourn.

Fatimoh was one of the thousands of students that Danfodiyo confirmed their admissions to study in the university for the 2023/2024 academic session.

With sheer love for education and grim eagerness to make home proud, she quickly settled down and made a promise never to miss any of her classes. Despite all the determination, passion and resilience that Fatimoh has put into her apiary, the fact that she still encounters problems in her calculation courses was the challenges that have been keeping on her toes.

However, Fatimoh woke up one morning, and as usual, she held onto her phone to surf WhatsApp. As she continued to navigate through her green app, she bumped onto a group message. Therein, the message called on all 100-level students to attend the tutorial classes organized by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN of UDUS.

Fatimoh expressed her delight over the tutorial class and emphasized its timeliness in helping new students to tread the right paths. “It is a kind of assistance, to help us understand what we don't understand in the class,” she remarked.

One of the key impacts that this tutorial class has had on Fatimoh was that she has been able to nip her fear in the bud by standing on her feet to ask whatever question that she found puzzling in a reading encounter. Things she couldn't have dreamed of before she attended the tutorial class.

Abdul Mustapha, a 100-level student from the department of Physics was also among the new intakes who will never forget the significant contributions that the tutorial class has had on his academic performance especially the mathematics class.

“Mathematics has always been a pain in the neck for me but this tutorial class is helping me settle well,” Abdul expressed.

On Monday, April 29, PEN PRESS reporter visited the tutorial class organized by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria and he discovered the atmosphere around A133 lecture hall where the mathematics class was held to be lively and awe-inspiring. The lecture hall was full of 100-level students who offered Mathematics as a course or borrowed it from another department as Abdul.

Also, Muhammad Sanni, a Physical and Computing Science student said a lot of things which he doesn't comprehend in class due to the large number of the attendees, he can now decipher it giving regards to MSSN tutors.

“I have to also recognize the significant contributions of the tutors that handled the classes on behalf of the association. Because it is one thing to have the aim to organize something, but to have effective hands handling it is another thing entirely,” Sanni said with an appreciative look written all over his face.

MSSN Expresses Gladness Over Students’ Turnout

Aminu Sani Uba, MSSN Deputy Ameer Planning who double as the Association Education Chairman said their association is well known for humanitarian services and one of the important tasks before the association is to help ensure that the students in the university take care of their religion, propagate the good culture that the university is widely known for, and most importantly ensure that they take proper care of their academics.

“That is why we created the tutorial classes to provide a classroom for robust learning and help students on courses they find difficult,” Uba said.

While appreciating the students who found their ways to the tutorial class, he expressed his dissatisfaction over the non-participation that the association recorded from the students from Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences, and Management Sciences."
