Ahead of the anticipated Nation wide protest scheduled for tomorrow Thursday August 1st, 2024, Senate has warned students of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education not to join any protest but to focus on their studies and examination.

The Chairman of Senate Professor Okechuku Onuchuku who spoke on behalf of Members during the statutory Senate meeting on Wednesday July 31, 2024 at the Postgraduate Hall hinted that graduation on record time should be their primary assignment and concerns and not protest of any kind.

He stressed that parents will not forgive the University if any harm should come to their wards and children kept in the custody of the institution and admonished students not to let themselves to be used or enticed by anyone to come out for any demonstration as hoodlums may take advantage of the opportunity to cause mayhem which may have a negative impact on such students.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of IAUE urged Members of Senate to carefully manage the situation and see to it that the University environment is not in any way affected by the demonstration. He also enjoined staff to go about their normal and lawful businesses adding that the academic calendar of the University will run its full course.

Professor Onuchuku however advised staff and students to be mindful of their surroundings and to be alert and sensitive to the kind of places that they visit throughout the duration of the protest. National Universities Commission (NUC) he informed had sent an SOS to Universities across the country to ensure that institutions of higher learning are “No Go Areas” for the planned protest. He assured that the security agencies have been briefed and would patrol the University all through the period to ensure the safety of lives and property of the University Community.

Lending his voice to the discourse on the floor of the house, the Associate Dean of Postgraduate School, Professor Chibuzor Nwobueze advised parents to appeal to their children and wards to fear God and respect constituted authority. While reiterating that it is easier to destroy than to build and that a collapsing sky will not spare anyone, he implored all to guard their friends, children, younger ones and to tell them to give peace a chance.
