The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (CIED) of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, has organized an orientation programme for 100-level students, aimed at preparing them with the right mindset for entrepreneurship development before graduation.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman, the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Kabir Muhammad Adamu, welcomed the students and emphasized the importance of the programme as a critical component of both their academic journey and personal growth.

He noted that gaining admission into the university is not only an academic achievement but also an opportunity to enter a dynamic environment where ideas are nurtured, talents are discovered, and future leaders are shaped, stressing that in today’s evolving global landscape, education without entrepreneurship is incomplete.

Professor Adamu further highlighted that what distinguishes graduates in the modern world is their ability to think creatively, identify opportunities, solve real-life problems, and create value. He therefore urged the students to take advantage of the programme by starting early learning skills, exploring innovative business ideas, and building sustainable ventures while still in school.

He encouraged them to remain curious, committed, and proactive, adding that the knowledge and experience gained during their time in the university would serve as a strong foundation for future success.

“The future belongs to those who are willing to create, innovate, and take initiative,” he stated, wishing the students a productive and impactful experience throughout the orientation programme.

In his welcome remarks, the Director of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (CIED), Professor Idris Ndagi, warmly welcomed the students and described the orientation programme as more than a routine academic exercise. He explained that it serves as a platform for students to discover their potential beyond classroom learning, where ideas are nurtured and creativity is encouraged. According to him, while university education provides knowledge, the realities of today’s world require students to develop the ability to think critically, innovate, and solve problems.

Professor Ndagi emphasized that entrepreneurship should be seen not just as starting a business, but as a mindset that enables individuals to identify opportunities, take initiative, and create value in any field. He highlighted the various opportunities available through the Centre, including skills training, mentorship, and practical experiences designed to equip students for future challenges.

He urged them to take full advantage of these opportunities by remaining open-minded, asking questions, and actively engaging in all activities.

The Director them that the Centre was open to all, regardless of background or level, advising them to reflect on their interests, identify problems around them, and begin to think of solutions.

Some 100-level students who attended the orientation programme expressed optimism about the impact of the initiative, noting a significant shift in their mindset towards entrepreneurship and self-development.

Many of them indicated a renewed willingness to explore business opportunities, while others showed interest in joining the university’s research centre and the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development to acquire practical skills that would enable them to become self-reliant.

The students commended the Directorate of the Centre and the University Management for what they described as a rare and valuable opportunity, and pledged to take full advantage of the platform by actively participating in training and skill acquisition programmes, with a view to building sustainable ventures and securing their future beyond graduation.

In his closing remarks and vote of thanks, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Alhaji Idris Sale Kusherki, represented by the Establishment Secretary, Mr. Sunday Gana, conveyed appreciation to the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development for organizing what he described as a timely and impactful programme.

He commended the leadership of the Centre and assured them of the University Management’s continued support for initiatives that enhance the Institution’s reputation both nationally and across Africa.

He urged the students to take the programme seriously, stressing that academic qualifications alone do not guarantee success in today’s highly competitive and saturated labour market.

According to him, what truly matters is the ability to apply knowledge, think creatively, and develop practical skills that can translate into self-reliance. He encouraged them to begin early in building entrepreneurial capacity, noting that many graduates struggle due to lack of initiative. He further advised students to share the knowledge gained with their peers and participate fully in subsequent sessions, expressing confidence that the programme would equip them with the mindset and tools needed for future success.
