Igbinedion University, Okada, has urged academics to move beyond routine publications and focus on research that attracts international funding and delivers measurable societal impact.

The call was made by renowned Nigerian scientist, Prof. Charles Adetunji, who ranks among the world’s top 2 percent researchers, during a one day workshop organized by the Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II College of Natural and Applied Sciences.
The workshop, themed “Crafting the Grant Winning Proposal Research Innovation and Grant Hunting,” was held on Friday at the University Library Conference Hall in Okada, Edo State.
Prof. Adetunji challenged researchers to prioritise high impact studies capable of addressing real world problems and attracting global grants. He argued that the future of academic relevance lies in research that solves societal challenges rather than routine academic output.

He also identified institutional constraints such as bureaucratic delays, funding gaps, and weak approval systems as major barriers to research productivity in Nigeria, stressing that the issue is often structural rather than individual.
According to him, research productivity should be redefined in terms of output, impact, and efficiency, with greater emphasis on work that contributes directly to policy development, innovation, and national growth.
He further encouraged scholars to align their research with global development priorities, particularly the Sustainable Development Goals covering poverty reduction, healthcare, clean energy, and climate action.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, said the institution is strengthening its focus on research excellence and global competitiveness.
He also announced the appointment of Prof. Adetunji as Visiting Professor to support the university’s research development agenda and enhance its academic ecosystem.

The university reiterated its commitment to building a research driven environment that produces solutions with both national and international relevance.
