Igbinedion University, Okada has announced a major step forward in its drive to strengthen sustainable waste management practices, following the return of its delegation from an intensive study tour to Greece and Denmark under the SWARM Project.

According to the University, the visit provided a clear operational blueprint drawn from Europe’s advanced recycling ecosystems, including integrated municipal waste systems and high-efficiency plastic recovery processes. A key highlight of the tour was the engagement with Aalborg University, where the delegation examined the institution’s renowned Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The approach equips students with practical, solution-oriented competencies and has been credited with producing industry-ready graduates.
Building on these insights, Igbinedion University confirmed that work is being fast-tracked on the establishment of the SWARM Innovation Hub on campus. The Hub is expected to serve as a national reference point for sustainable plastic waste management—driving research, innovation, policy conversations and partnerships between academia and industry players.

The University reaffirmed its commitment to shaping Nigeria’s sustainability agenda, noting that the lessons acquired through the SWARM Project will accelerate local adoption of global best practices. It added that the initiative marks a decisive shift in the institution’s broader push toward environmental stewardship and capacity-building for future-focused problem solvers.
The University emphasized that this is only the beginning of a long-term transformation strategy designed to position Nigeria as a leader in sustainable waste management innovation.
