On Saturday, 18th May 2024, a devastating accident unfolded at IMSU Junction in Owerri, claiming the lives of 6 individuals, among them a respected lecturer from Imo State University (IMSU). The collision occurred when a Dangote trailer driver collided with three mini buses, causing chaos and carnage at the busy junction.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragic accident unfolded around 7 p.m. as a truck, driving against traffic, collided with commuter buses en route from Owerri to the Owerri-Okigwe lane. The impact of the collision left numerous victims critically injured, fighting for survival.
Some passersby made valiant efforts to save the victims, rushing them to nearby hospitals, but their efforts were hindered by the absence of doctors on duty. Consequently, the victims were transported to the Federal Medical Center in Owerri, where medical personnel battled to save lives. Tragically, one victim perished on the spot, while five others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Among the deceased was Dr. Nicholas Isinwa, a lecturer at IMSU's Department of Marketing, and an indigene of the Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of the state. His brother, Okpor Dominic, expressed profound grief over the tragic loss.

Residents have decried the recurring auto crashes at IMSU Junction, urging the state government to intervene and implement measures to prevent further tragedies.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives in the accident. He has directed a response team, including security agencies and the State Commissioner for Health, to ensure that adequate medical attention is provided to the injured. Additionally, Governor Uzodinma has ordered an investigation into the accident to identify the culprits responsible, who will be held accountable before the law.

The police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, confirmed the death of six individuals at the scene of the accident, while others were undergoing treatment at the FMC in Owerri.
