LASU Clarifies Admission Process Amid Social Media Allegations

Lagos State University (LASU) has responded to public concerns and social media speculations surrounding its 2025/2026 admission exercise, describing the situation as “a victim of our own success.”

The University noted that ordinarily, it owes no applicant an explanation regarding admission decisions, but the rise of misleading narratives, particularly allegations of admission racketeering by staff, necessitated clarification.

In a statement signed by Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi A., Deputy Registrar/Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Lagos State University, the institution established key facts for the benefit of the public.

i. The Lagos State University Law 2004 (As amended), Ch. L69, Vol. 7, Section 3, item “m”, empowers the University to adopt a merit-driven admission policy open to all applicants, with a guiding principle of 70:30 ratio in favour of Lagos State indigenes whenever possible.

ii. Based on this principle, LASU has offered admission strictly on merit to the highest-performing candidates in each course, as well as to cleared and verified indigenes of Lagos State through supplementary and discretionary admissions. More lists will be released, and indigenes yet to secure admission are advised to keep checking their status.

The University further explained that with over 70,000 applicants—the highest number for any institution in Nigeria during the 2025 JAMB UTME—fewer than 20% could be admitted, which inevitably left many qualified candidates without admission.

On the issue of racketeering, LASU refuted claims that admission can be bought, stressing that the power to admit rests solely with the Vice-Chancellor and no staff member has the authority to sell admission slots. The statement warned applicants against falling victim to fraudsters, emphasizing that anyone making such promises is exploiting desperation.

Management, however, assured the public that it takes all allegations of racketeering seriously and urged anyone with verifiable evidence to report via complaints.admissions@lasu.edu.ng, with a commitment that all genuine reports will be investigated and culprits punished.

The statement concluded that LASU’s growing popularity is proof of progress, but also a reminder of the responsibility to maintain transparency, fairness, and merit in its admissions.

“We are LASU, We are Great!” the University reaffirmed.
