LASU Marks International Men’s Day with Call for Positive Male Role Models

The Lagos State University (LASU) commemorated International Men's Day on Tuesday, 19th November 2024, at the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre, Ojo, with the theme "Positive Male Role Models." Organised by the Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (CRPSGBV) in collaboration with UN Women and supported by the Ford Foundation, the event spotlighted the role of men in promoting equity and social justice.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, the Registrar, Mr Emmanuel A. Fanu, highlighted the essence of positive masculinity, emphasising values such as empathy, integrity, and leadership. Prof. Olatunji-Bello reaffirmed LASU's commitment to fostering a culture of responsibility and gender equality, stating, “Positive male role models are essential for building a just and equitable society.”

Acting CRPSGBV Director, Dr. Igot Ofem, underscored the significance of celebrating men’s contributions while advancing gender equality and well-being.

The event featured a Fireside Chat moderated by Prof. S.A. Dosunmu, with panelists such as Prof. Moses Akanbi, Prof. Onipede Wusu, and Mr Damilare Adewusi, who shared insights on fostering positive masculinity.

A key highlight was the launch of a male mentoring platform, with eight exemplary male mentors, including Prof. Tayo Ajayi and Comrade Adebobola Ayomide Stephen, the 35th Students Union President-elect, receiving recognition for their leadership.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Mrs Olusunbo Akinyemi, Administrative Secretary of CRPSGBV, reiterating LASU’s dedication to inclusivity and respect.
