Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has reaffirmed its reputation for fostering innovation as 500-level Mechanical Engineering student Amoo Taiwo emerged First Runner-Up in the Patrick Andrew Engineering Innovation Challenge 4.0.
The competition took place during the National Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) in Lagos from October 16 to 18, 2025.
Amoo Taiwo presented “AutoMed,” a smart drug-dispensation companion designed to remind users—particularly the elderly and individuals with disabilities—when to take their medication. The device aims to prevent common medication errors such as forgetfulness, overdosing, and underdosing, earning accolades from both judges and participants.
The AutoMed project was developed collaboratively by Taiwo, Bello Abdullahi, Emmanuel Lafenwa, and Azeez Fatiha under the mentorship of Professor Tesleem Asafa, Director of the Centre for Emerging Skills and Technologies (CEST) at LAUTECH. The team received monetary and non-monetary awards, along with certificates of excellence and recognition.
In addition to this achievement, Amoo Taiwo was elected National President of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers – National Students’ Forum (NIMechE-NSF), becoming the second LAUTECH student to attain this prestigious national position.
Professor Tesleem Babatunde Asafa, Director of CEST, noted that the accomplishment reflects LAUTECH’s commitment to nurturing innovation, leadership, and technological advancement, positioning its students to make significant contributions to engineering and society at large.
