The Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof. Ursula N. Akanwa, has described microbiology as a critical scientific discipline in addressing global challenges such as food insecurity, climate change, environmental degradation, and public health threats.

The Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof. Ursula N. Akanwa, has described microbiology as a critical scientific discipline in addressing global challenges such as food insecurity, climate change, environmental degradation, and public health threats.

She made the statement while welcoming guests to the 72nd inaugural lecture of the university titled “Microbial Sovereignty and the Power of the Unseen: Perspectives on the 99.999% Microbial Activity,” held at the Senator Anyim Pius Anyim Auditorium.

Prof. Akanwa stated that the increasing complexity of global problems requires innovative, science-driven solutions, stressing that microbiology has become indispensable in advancing sustainable development.

“As a University with a mandate rooted in agriculture, science, innovation, and sustainable development, we recognize the indispensable role of microbiology in addressing contemporary global challenges,” she said.

She explained that although microorganisms are invisible to the human eye, their impact on human health, agriculture, and environmental systems is profound and far-reaching.

According to the Professor of Educational Measurement and Evaluation, microbial systems continue to provide sustainable and transformative solutions across key sectors of society.

She noted that the concept of “Microbial Sovereignty” challenges traditional scientific perspectives by highlighting the dominant role microorganisms play in biological and ecological processes that sustain life on earth.

The Vice-Chancellor also described inaugural lectures as a core academic tradition in universities, providing a platform for professors to present years of research and demonstrate its relevance to societal development.

Prof. Akanwa further encouraged students and young academics to embrace research and innovation as tools for solving real-world problems and driving national development.

The lecture was attended by Principal Officers of the university, Deans, Directors, members of Senate, staff, students, alumni, friends of the university, and members of the general public.
