On the 4th of August 2023, the beloved community of Modakeke mourned the loss of a remarkable figure, the iconic and revered Professor Moses Ayodeji Isawumi. Known as the "silent lion" and hailed as a hero par excellence in Modakeke, he peacefully departed to the world beyond. And on the 26th of October 2023, Modakeke gathered to pay their last respects as he was laid in state at the Modakeke Town Hall, an initiative he himself had set in motion some 35 years ago.

The Modakeke Town Hall, filled to capacity with people who came to honor their departed hero, witnessed an outpouring of encomium from Modakeke Progressive Union (MPU) officials, past and present, as they celebrated the extraordinary bravery of their second president.

Amidst gun salutes by Vigilante members and the resonating beat of the Saabada drum, the body of the late Professor Isawumi was welcomed into the beautifully decorated hall. Past presidents of MPU, including luminaries like Professor Wale Fadare, Alhaji Prince Tajudeen Oke, and Rotarian Julius Odegbemi, took turns to eulogize the fallen hero and acknowledge the immense void his passing leaves in the community.

Born in Modakeke, Professor Isawumi spent his entire life in the town and dedicated his boundless energy to its service. His journey began as a Science Teacher at Modakeke High School between 1967 and 1974, and he subsequently became a Graduate Assistant at the University of Ife in 1975. In 1978, he assumed the role of the first Secretary of MPU, serving throughout the tumultuous period of 1981/82.

In 1983, he ascended to the presidency of MPU, guiding the community through the process of recovery and reconstruction after the devastating war of 1981/82. His tenure also marked the inception of the now-famous annual Akoraye Day celebration in 1988, an event that has facilitated numerous communal development projects, too numerous to count. Professor Isawumi adeptly juggled the responsibilities of MPU presidency (1983 - 1991) with the Chairmanship of the Board of Governors of Modakeke High School (1986 - 1995). He consistently represented and defended Modakeke's interests with unwavering determination and fearlessness.

Upon his retirement from Obafemi Awolowo University in 2006, he devoted himself entirely to the role of a Modakeke elder statesman and was honored in December of 2010 with the title "APESIN OF MODAKEKE" by Ogunsua Adedoyin.
