Mountain Top University VC Urges Mass Communication Students on Social Responsibility, Warns Against Fake News

Mountain Top University's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elijah Ayolabi, has called on Mass Communication students to avoid spreading fake news and to embrace social responsibility. Speaking at the university’s 2024 Departmental Student's Week, he emphasized the need for media literacy and digital skills.

 The Vice-Chancellor of Mountain Top University (MTU), Prof. Elijah Ayolabi, has urged Mass Communication students to prioritize social responsibility and steer clear of disseminating fake news. Prof. Ayolabi made this appeal during the 2024 Departmental Student's Week and the second edition of the industry partnership series organized by the Department of Mass Communication.

Highlighting the adverse effects of fake news on society and the nation, Prof. Ayolabi emphasized the importance of media literacy and the acquisition of digital skills. "As gatekeepers and watchdogs of society, you must operate with integrity, ensuring social responsibility in your professional endeavors," he stated.

Prof. Ayolabi assured students that Mountain Top University, a faith-based institution, is committed to providing a well-rounded education that includes sound morals and character development. This, he noted, would prepare them to make a significant impact on society and global development.

Lekan Otufodunrin, a veteran journalist and Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, advised students to be prepared for the challenges of the digital age by taking their studies seriously and acquiring relevant skills. He emphasized the vast opportunities within the Mass Communication sector for those willing to work hard and recognize these opportunities.

Otufodunrin reminisced about his journalism career, stating, "You don't become a Mass Communication Professional upon graduation. You need to start now, applying what you've learned and seeking additional knowledge to be industry-compliant."

Dr. Chinyere Mbaka, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, encouraged students to utilize the department's state-of-the-art facilities, including a functional radio and television studio. She stressed the value of the industry-academia partnership series, which brings industry experts to share practical experiences with students.
