Niger State House of Assembly Calls for Relocation of College of Education Minna

The Niger State House of Assembly has urged the executive arm of the Niger State Government to relocate the College of Education Minna to Suleja. This decision, reached during a plenary session on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, aims to address the shortage of tertiary institutions in the Suleja Emirate and improve student enrollment rates.

The motion, sponsored by Hon. Murtala Adamu Badaru, the Member representing Suleja Constituency, highlighted several key points. Hon. Badaru noted that in December 2023, the National Universities Commission approved the establishment of Abdulkadir Kure University Minna, which now shares premises with the College of Education Minna. This overlapping of educational institutions in the same location has led to an inefficient use of resources.

In his presentation, Hon. Badaru emphasized that Suleja, a significant commercial hub in the state, has long faced a shortage of tertiary institutions. This lack of educational facilities has adversely impacted the educational development of residents in Suleja and the surrounding areas, including Gurara and Tafa Local Government Areas.

Hon. Badaru further explained that the Niger State College of Education Suleja outreach center, located along the Madalla-Suleja road, is currently the largest satellite campus in the state. It boasts 15 classrooms, a 500-capacity lecture hall, a 33Kva transformer, three blocks of science laboratories, a library, a female hostel, and an administrative block under construction. The center is situated on land owned by the Suleja community, which offers the potential for expansion.

Relocating the College of Education to Suleja, according to Hon. Badaru, would alleviate the financial burden on constituents who struggle to afford schooling for their children outside the area. Additionally, it would help combat the issue of out-of-school children by making education more accessible.

The House of Assembly unanimously adopted the motion's prayers following deliberations. The session was presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji.
